Ideal Muslimah
Lecture #6
(From
the book Ideal Muslimah by Dr. Muhammad Ali al-Hashimi)
Chapter
1: The Muslim Woman and Her Rabb (cont.)
1. She is obedient to the commands of Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) p. 25
The
true Muslim woman does not forget that she is duty bound to perform all the
religious duties that Allah (subhanahu wa
ta'ala) has commanded her to do.
Some
stories of the righteous female predecessors.
The
story related to this ayah.
(It is not fitting for a Believer, man or
woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger, to have any
option about their decision: if anyone disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is
indeed on a clearly wrong Path.) (Qur'an 33:36)
2.
She does not sit alone with a
"stranger"
Obedience to Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) and His Messenger can only be achieved by
following their commands and keeping away from that which they have prohibited.
One way in which the Muslim woman obeys Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala)
and His Messenger is by not sitting alone with a "stranger" i.e., i.e., a man to whom
she is not related, because doing so is haram according to the consensus
of the scholars, on the
basis of the hadith:
"A man should not sit alone with a woman
unless a mahram is with her, and a woman should not travel without a mahram."
A man stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah (salla Allahu alihi wa sallam), my wife has set out for
Hajj, and I have enlisted for such-and-such a military expedition." He
said, "Go and perform Hajj with your wife." [Sahih Bukhair and
Muslim]
Stories of the negative outcomes when Muslim
women mix with men
3.
She wears correct hijab
Islamic
dress whose features have been clearly defined by the Qur'an and Sunnah. She
does not go out of the house, or appear before non-mahram men, wearing
perfume, make-up or other fineries, because she knows that this is haram according
to the Qur'an:
(And
say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty;
that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what [must
ordinarily] appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms
and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands'
fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons,
or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess,
or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no
sense
of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw
attention to their hidden ornaments. And O you Believers! Turn all together towards
Allah, that you may attain Bliss.)
(Qur'an
24:31)
The Prophet (salla Allahu alihi wa sallam) said:
"There
are two types of the people of Hell that I have not seen: people with whips
like the tails of oxen, with which they beat the people, and women who are
dressed yet still appear naked, who are inclined to evil and make their
husbands incline towards it also. Their heads are like the humps of camels,
leaning to one side. They will not enter Paradise, or even smell its scent,
although its scent can be discerned from such-and-such a distance." [Sahih
Muslim]
