Revive a Sunnah: Receive a good deed for every believing man and woman

Shaykh Abdur Razzaq:

The statement of the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam):

Whoever seeks forgiveness for the male and female Muslims, he will receive for himself a good deed for each and every one of them.

Look! Whoever seeks forgiveness for the male Muslims and the female Muslims, he will receive for himself a good deed for each and every one of them. Do you know how many good deeds you will receive if you say in your supplication?:

اللَّهُمَّ اغفِر لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ والْمُسْلِمَاتِ وَالمُؤمِنِينَ وَالمُؤمِنَاتِ، الأَحيَاءِ مِنهُم وَالأَموَاتِ

O Allah, forgive the male and female Muslims, and the male and female believers, the living and the deceased.

A phrase which is not even one line; how many good deeds will you receive? Count from Adam until Allah inherits the earth and all those upon it. You will receive a good deed for every Muslim; millions of good deeds. Then you supplicate for them to have guidance, firmness, assistance, success, and safety from trials and tribulations. If this supplication comes from your heart this is proof of the soundness of your heart and conscience for the welfare of your Muslim brother.

Translator’s note: Below is another wording of the Hadith which has been declared Hassan by Shaykh Al Albani

‘Whoever seeks forgiveness for the believing men and believing women, Allah writes a good deed for him for every believing man and woman.’

Revive a Sunnah: Response to Fighting or Abuse When Fasting

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, “Fasting is a shield (or a screen or a shelter). So, the person observing fasting should avoid sexual relation with his wife and should not behave foolishly and impudently, and if somebody fights with him or abuses him, he should tell him twice, ‘I am fasting.” The Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) added, “By Him in Whose Hands my soul is, the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. (Allah says about the fasting person), ‘He has left his food, drink and desires for My sake. The fast is for Me. So I will reward (the fasting person) for it and the reward of good deeds is multiplied ten times.”

Revive a Sunnah: Dua When Breaking Fast at Someone’s Home

Narrated Anas ibn Malik, The Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) came to visit Sa’d ibn Ubaydah, and he brought bread and olive oil, and he ate (them). Then the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:

أَفْطَرَ عِنْدَكُمُ الصَّائِمُونَ وَأَكَلَ طَعَامَكُمُ الأَبْرَارُ وَصَلَّتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ

afṭara ‛indakum-uṣ–ṣaa’imoona wa akala ṭa‛aamakum-ul-abraaru, wa ṣallat ‛alaykum-ul-malaa’ikah

May the fasting break their fast with you, and the pious eat your food, and the angels pray for blessing on you.

Revive a Sunnah: Hasten to Break the Fast

The Messenger of Allah (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:
“The people will continue to be in a good state as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

It was narrated that Anas ibn Maliksaid: “The Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) used to break his fast before praying by eating fresh dates, and if there were no fresh dates he would eat dried dates; if there were no dried dates, he would have a few sips of water.” (al-Sawm, 632; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, no. 560)

Al-Mubaarakfoori  said in his commentary on the hadeeth: “This indicates the lengths to which the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) went in order to hasten to break his fast.”

So we should break our fast with something small before we pray Maghrib after which we have our meal inshaallah.

Revive a Sunnah: Delaying the Suhoor

The Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: “If one of you hears the call to prayer (Adhan) and the vessel is in the hand of one of you, then let him not put it down until he fulfills his need from it.”

Reported by Abu Daw'ud.

1. Al-Albani (may Allah grant him Al-Firdaus) said: "And what is meant here by the call is the second call, the second Adhaan. It is not the first Adhaan, which they wrongly call the Adhaan for withholding (al-Imsaak). We must know that there is no basis for calling the first Adhaan the Adhaan for withholding (imsaak)."

2. The second Adhaan is when we are to withhold, and this is clearly stated in the Qur'an, since Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: "And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes clear to you from the black thread of the night."

3. There occurs in the hadeeth agreed upon by al-Bukharee and Muslim, from the hadeeth of Abdullaah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhu) that the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "Let not the Adhaan of Bilaal deceive you," meaning, the first Adhaan, "because he gives the Adhaan in order to awaken the person who is sleeping, and so that the person who wishes to eat the pre-dawn meal can do so. So eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktoon gives the Adhaan."

4. It is opposition to Allah and to the Messenger that a person says that one who hears the adhaan whilst he has food in his mouth must spit it out upon the ground. This is not from the Sunnah. Rather this is contrary to the Sunnah, and is contrary to the clear command of the Messenger (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam).

[Taken from "Silsilah al-Hudaa wan-Noor, Tape No. 590 "]

The Neglect: What happens today is totally contrary to this. Many people eat their Suhoor an hour before Fajr or withhold from food and drink 15 minutes or so before dawn. This is not befitting. This is contrary to the Sunnah – the saying of the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and his practice.

The Sunnah: The companions of the Prophet (sall Allaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) used to eat the Suhoor so late that one of them would almost hear the Adhan and he would still be eating because he had delayed the Suhoor.
