Revive A Sunnah

In the name of Allah

Revive a Sunnah: Starting Your Day with Four Rak'at

Abu Dharr (radi Allahu anhu) narrated:

The Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) narrated that Allah the Most High said: “Son of Adam perform four Rak’at for Me in the beginning of the day; they will suffice you for the latter part of the day.”

Collected by At-Tirmidhi, 475; Abu Dawud, 1291; and Ahmad, 2/235 - Tirmidhi classed it as Hasan.

1. Al-Mubarakfuri (rahimahullah) said: “Rak’at for Me in the beginning of the day… Means: Salatul Duha, Salatul Ishraq, and Sunnatus Subh. These are the names for this prayer.

2. At-Taybee said, “These four Rak’at are enough for your affairs and needs throughout the day [to be made easy]. These four Rak’at repel from you whatever you dislike right through the day. [Tuhfatul Ahwadhee]

3. Ibn Al-Arabee (rahimahullah) said, “Salatul Duha is the prayer of the Prophets before Muhammad (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam). Allah says, 'Our Praises with him [Dawud] in the Ashi [after the midday until sunset] and Ishraq [sunrise till mid-day]“ (38:18) - [Shark al Jam’i At-Tirmidhi]

Revive a Sunnah

Revive a Sunnah: Raising the eyes to the sky and making dua when leaving the home 

Narrated Umm Salamah, Ummul Mu'minin:
The Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) never went out of my house without raising his eyes to the sky and saying:

اللَّهُمَّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَضِلَّ أَوْ أُضَلَّ ، أَوْ أَزِلَّ أَوْ أُزَلَّ ، أَوْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ ، أَوْ أَجْهَلَ أَوْ يُجْهَلَ عَلَيَ

allaahumma innee a‛oodhu bika an aḍilla aw uḍalla, aw azilla aw uzalla, aw athlima aw uthama, aw ajhala aw yujhala ‛alayy

"O Allah! I seek refuge in Thee lest I stray or be led astray, or slip or made to slip, or cause injustice, or suffer injustice, or do wrong, or have wrong done to me."

Revive a Sunnah: Passing Drinks to the Right

Narrated Anas ibn Malik:

Allah's Messenger (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) came to our house and he asked for a drink. We milked a goat for him and then mixed it (the milk) with the water of this well of mine. I gave it to Allah's Messenger (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) and he drank it, while Abu Bakr was on his left and 'Umar was in front of him, and a desert Arab was on his right. When Allah's Messenger (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) had finished the drink, Umar said: Allah's Messenger, here is Abu Bakr, give him to drink; but Allah's Messenger (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) gave it to the desert Arab and he left out Abu Bakr and Umar. And Allah's Messenger (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: Those on the right, those on the right, those on the right (deserve preference). Anas (radi Allahu anhu) said: This is the Sunnah, this is the Sunnah, this is the Sunnah. [Muslim]

Just as we use our right hands for eating and drinking, we should start with our right sides when putting on clothing, stepping into the masjid, combing our hair, etc.

Also, it is Sunnah to pass something to the right and even when greeting a group, it is encouraged for us to shake hands and continue going to the right until you have greeted everyone.

Revive a Sunnah: Wiping out sins

Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallaAllahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, 

لا اله الا الله وحده لا شريك له، له الملك وله الحمد، وهو على كل شيء قدير

“He who utters a hundred times in a day these words: `La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa `ala kulli sha’in Qadir (there is no true god except Allah. He is One and He has no partner with Him; His is the sovereignty and His is the praise, and He is Omnipotent),’ he will have a reward equivalent to that for emancipating ten slaves, a hundred good deeds will be recorded to his credit, a hundred of his sins will be blotted out from his scroll, and he will be safeguarded against the shaytan on that day till the evening; and no one will exceed him in doing more excellent good deeds except someone who has recited these words more often than him. And he who utters: `Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi (Allah is free from imperfection and His is the praise)’ one hundred times a day, his sins will be obliterated even if they are equal to the extent of the foam of the ocean.”
