In The Name Of Allah
Dated: September 6, 2013
Sirrat of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH)

The Lesson's main points:
1- The prophet's relation with the message and the people whom he should deliver this message. (The end of the introduction)

2-Arab before Islam (according to their religions, traditions and their geography)

1- By the relation between the prophet (PBUH) and the message, the author means the prophet's role. Is he like a leader of a country or a tribe? Did he control it only according to his orders? Was his relation with the people who believed in the oneness of Allah and believed in him as the last prophet separated or it continued on the right path? Can he like any Pope give or grant forgiveness and mercy?

The answer of all these questions is: No, of course not. That's because when Allah sent the prophet (PBUH) He only sent him to open the doors for the open-minded and intelligent people to understand what was and what would be. And that's why He sent the Quran to help him to guide people to goodness and inspire them with uprightness. The prophet (PBUH) is not a leader of a country or a tribe to connect people around him they go away and give up going on his message. He (PBUH) represented a stage in the evolution of mankind. Thus whether Muhammad (PBUH) remained or went away. This will not affect the real message. His prophecy's end is not to collect people around him and then they will either lose their conscious after his death, or lose their faith. So people who recognize the true faith in their lives, have definitely acknowledged Muhammad (PBUH), have taken shelter under his banner, even if they have never seen nor lived with their guide.

In the Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Most Gracious:

(O Mankind! Verily there has come to you a convincing proof [Prophet Muhammad] from your Rabb, we sent down to you a manifest light [This Quran]. So as for those who believed in Allah and held fast to Him, He will admit them to His Mercy and Grace [i.e. Paradise], and guide them to Himself by the Straight Path) (Quran 4:174-175)

The author then gives a good example about the people who seek the proximity to the prophet's grave and want to spend their lives beside it. They make their relation with the prophet of Islam (PBUH) weaker than the web of a spider. What do they gain from being beside his grave?

Those who understand the message and live it beyond the sands and the seas know the secret of the prophet (PBUH) better than those who prefer being beside his grave. It is a spiritual and mental proximity not a materialistic one that forms a strong bond between the prophet (PBUH) and his followers. This explains the difference between the Muslims who understand the message well and those who do not take from the message except its external cloth and not its internal core. That's why we say that you never love for Allah's sake unless you first know Allah. The natural sequence is that before anything else you should know who your Rabb is and what is your faith. This consequently will help you to reach to the true faith, evaluate the level of this faith increases or decreases according to the strong base you know, and appreciate the kindness of the one who conveyed the message of Allah and this is the meaning of Hadith:"Love Allah for the bounties He provides you with and love me for the love of Allah"
And also the meaning of the Quran verse:

(Say [o Muhammad to mankind]: If you really love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. Allah often is oft-Forgiving, All-Merciful) (Quran 3:31)

"قل إن كنتم تحبون الله فاتبعونى يحببكم الله و يغفر لكم ذنوبكم و الله غفور رحيم"(أل عمران)

Thus and from that we can conclude that the prophet's role is not a gateway to mercy and not to drag you to paradise with a rope, his task is only to implant insight into your heart and open your eyes on the right path and his means to do this is the book which is easy to remember and safe from deviation, Quran, that falsehood can never approach either from in front or behind.

So if the message of prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is an eternal, general and global message, the people who follow this message should know quite well the difference between someone who guides you and give you a chance to think end take decision and the one who force you or convince you that mercy in only in is hand and you cannot reach to your Rabb gate without his help. And there is also a great difference between the one who loves Allah and the Prophet by applying this love practically and tried to be like the prophet in our life and the one who only say the word of love without changing his love to a practical one.

Arabs at the advent of Islam

1-The Arabian Peninsula:

It is enclosed by the Red Sea from the west and Sinai, the Arabian Gulf in the east, in the south by the Arabian Sea; the extension of the Indian Ocean, and in the north by old Syria and part of Iraq. It is about a million and a quarter square miles.

This geographical position has a great importance according to its internal setting; it is mostly deserts and sandy places. Some people may say what's the importance of such a sandy place with no water and settled people, but tribes that depended more on immigration from a place to another searching for water and fields? But it is a very important place to be the home of a prophet and a messenger not just that it is a place where there is Kabba and it should be safe from invaders and foreigners. This environment allowed its people to live in independence and liberty through the ages, despite the presence of two great neighboring empires. On the other hand it had become the centre of trade, culture, religion and art because of its external setting with seas and most nations at times which makes this deserted place a strategic one.

2-Tribes who lived in Mecca before Islam:

Over the years Ishmael's children (PBUH); the son of Ibrahim; father of prophets (PBUH), had children. His descendants increased and formed tribes which spread out all over Arabia. One of these tribes was called Qurayesh. Its people never moved away from Mecca and always lived near the Kabba. One of the duties of the leader of Qurayesh was to look after those who came on pilgrimage to the Kabba. The Pilgrims would come from all over Arabia and it was a great honor to provide them with food and water.

As time passed however, the Arab stopped worshipping Allah directly and started bringing idols with them from the different countries the visited. These idols were placed at Kabba;which was no longer regarded as wholly and sanctuary of Allah, as Ibrahim (PBUH) had intended it. It was, however, respected by Arabs. Around this time the well of Zamzam disappeared beneath the sand. Qusayy was one of the leaders of Mecca at that time and he was responsible of taking care of Kabba and the pilgrims. After his death, his son Abdu Manaf who was famous during his father's life took over the leadership of Quraysh. After him came his son Hashim who was the first to begin the two great journeys or caravans of Quraysh, one to Syria and the north in the summer and another one to Yemen and the south in the winter. As result Mecca grew rich and became an important centre of trade.

One summer Hashim went north to buy goods to sell in Yemen. On his way he stopped in Yathrib and there he saw a beautiful woman. She was Salma, the daughter of Amr Ibn Zeid, who was from a much respected family. He proposed to her and was accepted because he was an honorable man.

In time, Salma gave birth to a beautiful son and as some of his hair was white they called him shaybah, which in Arabic means grey-haired.

They stayed in the cooler, healthier climate of Yathrib, while Hashim returned to Mecca, but he would visit them from time to time with his caravans to the north. During one of these journeys, Hashim became ill and died. However, Shaybah, a handsome son grew up in his uncle's house and he was proud of being the son of Hashim Ibn Abdi Manaf, the head of Quraysh, guardian of Kabba and protector of the pilgrims.

After Hashim's death his brother Al Muttalib took over his duties. He traveled to Yathrib to see his nephew,Shaybah, and decided that as the boy would one day inherit his father 's place, the time come for him to live in Mecca. It was hard for his mother, to let him go with his uncle but she finally realized that it was for his best.Al Muttalib returned to Mecca, entering the city at noon on his camel with Shaybah behind him. When people saw the boy they thought he was a slave and pointing at him saying Abd-ul Muttalib as "abd" in Arabic means slave.

Al Muttalib told them that he is his nephew and not a slave and from that time on they called him Abd-ul Muttalib. On the death of Al Muttalib, Abd-ul Muttalib took his place. He became the most respected member of his family admired by all people. He was, however, unlike those Arabs who had given up the teachings of Ibrahim (PBUH).

Summary of the lesson:

1- The bond that ties Allah, Prophet (PBUH), the message and the people who believe in Islam.

2-The geographical features of the Arabian Peninsula.

3- The tribes lived in Mecca especially the one from which the prophet(PBUH) descended.

1-Muhammed El Ghazaly(1917-1996) the author of Fiqh El Sirrat

He was an Islamic scholar whose writings have influenced generations of Egyptians. He attracted a broad following with works that sought to interpret Islam and its holy book, the Quran, in a modern light. He is widely credited with contributing to a revival of Islamic faith in Egypt over the last decade. He graduated fro Al Azhar University in 1941. He taught at the University of Umm Al Qura in Makkah, the University of Qatar and at Al Amir Abdul Gadir University for Islamic sciences in Algeria.

Al-Ghazali held the post of Chairman of the Academic Council of the International Institute of Islamic Thought in Cairo.Sheikh al-Ghazali authored more than sixty books, many of which have been translated into various languages, and was also the recipient of many awards, including the First Order of the Republic (Egypt)(1988), the King Faisal Award (1989) and the Excellence Award from Pakistan.

Sheikh Al-Ghazali was married and had seven children, two boys and five girls and was buried in Medina, Saudi Arabia. He was a very popular Sheikh in Egypt and remained so even after his death.

His Famous works are:
1-Islam and the Modern Economy.
2-Islam and Political Despotism.
3-Fanaticism and Tolerance Between Christianity and Islam.
4-Fiqh Al Seerah.
5-Exgesis of Quran.
6-Not From Islam.

Sheikh Ghazali divided his research around the history of Islam not only the prophet as he started with what happened before the prophet received his message of prophecy from Allah. Doing so, the reader can see the environment before the light of prophecy spread in people's spirits. Moving from the era before Islam to the prophet's bringing up and to the way Allah prepared his soul to be able to guide the humanity.

The book is divided into: nine chapters.
The first chapter is an introduction of the Prophet's Sirrat (PBUH) entitled in "A Message and a leader" from page 23—57
The second chapter includes the life of the prophet (PBUH) from birth to prophethood from page 69—104
In chapter three the author dealt with the struggles the prophet (PBUH) and Muslims faced in the beginning of Islam from 107—160
While in the fourth chapter there is a survey to Muslims immigration and what started to happen after that from 163—194
In chapter five there is a display of the new society built by Muslims from 199—225
Then chapter six will go with the battles Muslims had with their enemy from 233—340
Chapter seven explains a new phase in Muslims lives from 353—456
Both chapter eight and nine talk about the last days in prophet's life.

Chapter one

2- How the author dealt with the prophet's history and why he preferred showing the events in such arrangement.

Including Sheikh El Ghazali, a lot of author start the history of the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) before his birth and make it open. That's because before the prophet's birth is a pavement of the true faith's path, while the end is open as this is a message to the whole world from the prophet's era up till the Day of Judgment.

Moreover, using such way in dealing with Seerah is to highlight the purposes of Seerah studying and that's very clear in the first part of the book entitled in "A Message and Imam (leader)"

In this part the author makes a relation between various civilizations and paganism saying that after many centuries of science, experience, developed arts and philosophy, idolatry dominated these features of progress and forced their falling down. What else could there be after cows, wood and stones are worshipped? Entire nations became polluted with such perversions. Thus man who is normally Allah's successor on the Earth became a slave manipulated by these idols.

Paganism is coming from human inside not from the outer atmosphere. So as miserable man controls every feature of his life using his desperate behaviors, and frightened people imagine objects to be ghosts, also the absent-minded men and deformed personalities control the environment around him with their stupidity and sterility making from animals and things whatever he likes.

Consequently, religions address inner souls, so if man crashes idols and sacrifices animals without lightening his inner soul, nothing will happen in his fight against paganism. Only when small heart widens, thought awakens and people return to their lofty ideals, these pagan impressions will disappear automatically.

By this explanation, he shows the relation between paganism and ancient civilizations, not only that, he shows how a man after Jewish and Christianity even inset paganism inside these religions and changes a lot their pillars till Muhammad's (PBUH) message. Superstition borrows the accepted wear of truth and attacks the true religion, not as the bee attacks the flowers of spring, but as the worms waste the fertile soil. This is the secret why paganism, which does not know Allah, claims comes closer to Him and seeks His pleasure through its idols: a portion of truth in portion of falsehood.

So in the beginning of the sixth century of Jesus' birth (PBUH), Christianity borrowed all its pagan features from Indians and Ancient Egyptians' myths. But it's more dangerous than pure paganism as it is a kind of paganism mixed with the idea of God oneness. They turned day into darkness, peace into distress, and unity into idolatry and paganism. But what are the values of these flaws that Christianity complied?

In the name of Allah, the most Merciful, and the most Gracious:
"They (Jews, Christians and Pagans) say:" Allah has begotten a son (children)"glory be to Him! He is Rich (Free of all wants). His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. No warrant you have for this. Do you say against Allah what you know not. Say "Verily, those who invent lie against Allah will never be successful."(Quran 10: 68-70)

After showing this relation, the author talked about the nature of the last message from Allah.

One of the Characteristics of Muhammad's (PBUH) prophecy is that it is a general, global and eternal message.

Allah could send a guide in each age, but why he sent only one man for the whole world and ages?

Indeed, sending of one prophet is like the shortening we can make to facilitate understanding the meaning of sentences we read.

This is one of the important questions. How can this be?

For example, if you're walking in a dangerous and uneasy road and meet a man who says: follow me. Thus you will follow him till you reach your destination as you believe that safety is in obeying him. In this case he is your helper but if he loses his way, so do you.

But if you meet someone who only tells you about the right path and draw you a map and even walk with you at first to train you, and tells you about the dangerous places and what are stages of difficulties you have to pass through, thus you'll be your own guide and you can use your mentality, reasoning and your eyes whenever you need.

The first case is not more than guiding children, but when Allah sent his messenger and prophet(PBUH), He guranteed away for our mind and soul to recognize well every and each piece of knowledge and safety.

When Allah sent Muhammad (PBUH) to guide the world, He ensured that the message contained the principles which would open doors for intelligence people to understand what was and what would be.

*The prophet's relation with the message and the people whom he should deliver this message.

By the relation between the prophet (PBUH) and the message, the author means the prophet's role.

And there is also a great difference between the one who loves Allah and the Prophet by applying this love practically and tried to be like the prophet in our life and the one who only say the word of love without changing his love to a practical one.

*Arabs at the advent of Islam: They were weak in thought strong in desire. The news that spread among the followers of some previous religions that the time for the appearance of a prophet (PBUH). People were accustomed to receiving one prophet after another without too much time between each of them. After Jesus, however, the situation had changed. People were awaited for the coming prophet and many people prepared themselves to be in such great position, but they didn't recognize that this role isn't desired it is a task that prophets were chosen by Allah to carry this mission.

The author sticks in this part to the nation who deserves such a great honor, it is the nation that struggles for truth and doesn't allow it to be wronged. One of the characteristics is that, it is a nation with an ideology and methodology: its moral and material existence depends on the energy it expends for this purpose and the fruits it produces.

The author then tackles a very important point which is the prophet's natural body and materialistic needs as a human being, but Allah chose him without any disease or default. We all know that there are a lot of geniuses who suffer blindness or being deaf, but genius is not prophethood.Allah 's favour to anybody is that He should grant him freedom from all diseases so that all elements may be complete in order to fulfill their roles in life. Thus, Muhammed(PBUH) was a perfect human being and his life was in total accordance with Allah 's universal laws concerning outstanding heroes. Of course all prophets were given some miracles to help in people's believing, in Muhammed (PBUH) case may be we will notice some miracles but his major one is Quran. Muhammed and his companions learnt and taught fought and made peace, defeated and were defeated. No earthly laws was broken for their sake, they bore heavy losses in the path of their Lord and thus in the struggle for survival they had the priority of steadfastness and victory. This may be because Islam is the last message from Allah to believe in and He doesn't want people to depend on anything except their labor, mind, heart and faith.

HADITH TWENTY

Abu Mas’ud 'Uqbah bin ‘Amr Al-Ansary Al-Badry (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, 'One of the sayings of the early prophets that the people understand is, 'If you do not feel ashamed, do whatever you like." (Recorded by A ~Bukh3ry, Ahmad, Abu Dawuad, and ibn Majah)

Background

Haya’ can be translated as: modesty, shame, shyness or bashfulness.

The word haya’ is derived from the word “al-hayah”, which means life, as if the person who has no haya’ (modesty) is like a dead person.

Islam encourages and treasures al-haya’ or modesty. It is one of the most important characteristics that each and every Muslim should acquire and posses.

The following are some hadiths which emphasize this great quality:

“Haya’ (modesty) and faith are two that go together. If one is lifted, the other is also lifted.”

“Al-Haya’ is part of Iman.”

Possible interpretations of the text

Due to the form of the text, it may be interpreted in many possible meaningful ways. Imam Ibnu Rajab pointed out two interpretations of the text according to early scholars:
First interpretation: If you have no modesty, then do whatever you wish and Allah will punish you for what you do.

This mode of expression is well known in the Arabic language, and it is used for threatening someone.

Second interpretation: If you are contemplating an act and it is an act such that there is no reason to be ashamed of doing it before Allah or the people, then you may do that act. Modesty is used as a criterion over whether or not to do a certain act. The command here is in the form of displaying permission. However, there is a valid.

Third interpretation: given by (Ibn Al-Qayyam). He is in the view that the command is not what is meant by this statement. Instead, it is a statement of fact. The meaning is: If a person does not have any modesty, then there is nothing to prevent him/her from doing anything.

Haya’ is one of the most important factors that keeps a person from committing a sinful act. If a person has no haya’, he/she will do almost anything.

Lessons Deduced

Creedal Lessons:

1- Having faith in the message of Muhammad (peace be upon him) and whatever he brought entails believing in his prophethood and his mission; and from the basics of what came in this message is also believing in all the previous prophets and messengers. The Exalted says, which means, "The Messenger (Muhammad) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. They say, ‘We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers." (Al-Baqarah, 2:285) There is nothing strange in this matter as the Oneness of their Sender, the Exalted and Ever Majestic, unites all the messengers and prophets in the unity of the aim for which they were sent, which was calling people to submit to Allah, the Exalted, So why do we see this struggle between the followers of (Moses) and those of (Jesus)? And why is there all this hatred for the followers of Muhammad (peace be upon them all), as the source of all the messengers is one and their aim is one? I wonder who these rigid fanatic biased people are. Those who on the one hand, raise the rank of 'Jesus, the son of the virgin (Mary), to the level of divinity and shamelessly degrade Muhammad (peace be upon him) to the level of the fabricators and liars on the other? Or are they the people who only believe that with which Muses was sent, after its distortion of course, and then they pay no heed to anything that the son of Mary (Peace be upon them both) was sent with? In the Qur'an, Allah reveals their misconceptions and the mutual feelings of hatred between them. He says, which means, 'The Jews said that the Christians follow nothing (i.e., are not on the right religion); and the Christians said that the Jews follow nothing (i.e. are not on the right religion); though they both recite the Scripture.” (AI-Baqarah, 2:1 I3)

This quarrel and the insults between the two parties took place in front of the Prophet (peace be upon him) when some of the Christian people from  Najran came to see him. Some Jewish rabbis came and the two parties disputed in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). During the dispute the Jew Rafi' bin Harmalah said, 'You are not on the right religion.” Then, he declared his disbelief in (Jesus, peace be upon him) and the Gospel. At that, a Christian man from Najran said to the Jews, 'You are not on the right religion' Then, he denied the prophethood of (Muses, peace be upon him) and declared his disbelief in the Torah. So Allah revealed the verse above.” Or are they the people who do not feel any kind of susceptibility to believe in all the prophets and messengers, who even regard such susceptibility, if it is found, as something that blemishes their faith? The prophets themselves shared covenants with Allah and vowed to believe in, support, and help the messengers who would come after them, as the Exalted says, which means, 'And remember when Allah took the Covenant of the Prophets, saying, 'Take whatever I gave you from the Book and wisdom (understanding of the Laws of Allah, etc), and afterwards there will come to you a Messenger (Muhammad) confirming what is with you; you must then believe in him and help him.' Allah said, 'Do you agree (to if) and will you take up My Covenant (which I conclude with you' They said, 'We agree. He said, 'Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses (for this)/" (Al-Imran, 3:81) Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated than the Messenger of AIlah (Peace be upon him) said, 'Do not ask the People of the Book about anything, Verily, they will not guide you while they are misguided. If you ask them) you will either believe in falsehood or disbelieve in the truth. By Allah, if Muses (peace he upon him) were alive among you, it would not be lawful for him except that he would follow me."

2- Real modesty is not just an inner feeling that prevents one from committing sins in front of other beings. A person may not have the audacity to commit sins openly, but he may fear other people observing him or their pursuit and punishment. A truly modest person is the one who feels shy in front of His Creator, the Exalted and Glorious, because He Alone knows all secrets and hidden matters. Nothing can be hidden from Him, Whose Sight cannot be screened by closed doors, or traveling to Paris or London, etc. Everyone should he convinced that Allah can see him, where ‘or he is, that is if his faith does not enable him to reach the rank of seeing Allah in His Commands and prohibitions, which is the loftiest rank of true faith."Being embarrassed in front of Allah is not the same as being embarrassed in front of human beings. It is not as some, or rather many people, think, but it is as is illustrated in a prophetic saying narrated by 'Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) who said, 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, 'Feel Haya' (a moral behavior that denotes the utmost observance of awe and respect for Allah, which leads to the collective attributes of bashfulness, shyness, modesty, and prudence) in front of Allah as it should be felt.'
We said, 'O Messenger of Allah! We do, and all praises are due Allah. He said, 'It is not that, feeling Haya’ in front of Allah is to keep the head with all that it comprehends and the stomach with all that it contains (away from all the prohibitions of Allah), and to remember death and the decay (In the grave). And whoever wants the (reward of) the Hereafter should abandon the vanities of this world. Anyone who does so will be truly feeling Haya’ in front of Allah as it should be felt."

Social lessons:

The power of Haya' is the strongest one, and when the individuals of a nation lose it, this will lead to a great deterioration socially. At such a time there, neither property nor honor will be secure. The lack of such a quality was the reason behind the end of many nations, the destruction of their people, and the min of their civilizations; and history is witness to what I am saying, as the Exalted says, which means, 'And when We decide to destroy a town (population), We (first) send a definite order (to obey Allah and be righteous) to those among them [or We (first) increase in number those of its population] who are given the good things of this life. Then, they transgress therein, and thus the word (of torment) is justified against if (them). Then we destroy it with complete destruction.' (Al-Isra', 17:16)

Hadith in Practice

Many people think that bashfulness and modesty means to abstain from talking, even for the purpose of revealing a truth, renouncing an evil, or to inquire about the Laws nf Allah. This is a totally wrong conception. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) himself was shyer than a virgin girl in her private rooms, but this neither stopped him from forbidding the wrong nor did it make him acknowledge falsehood or wrongdoing. In an authentic prophetic saying, ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated, "May Allah be merciful to the women of the Ansar (Supporters), their shyness did not prevent them from asking about the affairs of their religion and learning their religion well.' Al-BulchAry recorded that Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated, 'Umm Sulaim came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Verily, Allah is not shy of (telling you) the truth. Is it necessary for a woman to take a ritual bath after she has a wet dream (nocturnal sexual discharge)?’ The Prophet replied, 'Yes, if she notices a discharge."
Using several different pretexts, many in the Muslim community have shed their characteristics of bashfulness, such as some of the women, rulers, writers, and journalists.

Conclusion

Haya’ or modesty is a great Islamic concept that leads to goodness and keeps a Muslim away from doing a bad or indecent act when its level is maximized. Treating bad actions, as shown by revelation, as evil acts and feeling ashamed of Allah to do it and ashamed of the community, are ways of acquiring Haya’. Faith and Haya’ are linked. When there is faith, there is Haya’, and vice versa. All of us are born with natural Haya’. However it is subject to be spoiled due to environment and dominating ideologies. Technology misuse has its negative and destructive impact on Haya’. Muslims need to be aware of such challenges and exert their effort to overcome them. Haya’ cannot be used as an excuse for not doing good deeds and acts.
